SUMMARY:Monster Redfish in Louisiana--Hosted Trip
DESCRIPTION:Redfish are rapidly becoming one of the most sought after species on a fly rod. And it’s no wonder why: these fish feed in shallow waters\, punch way above their weight class and live in stunning environments. \nFor redfish anglers\, December in Louisiana is about as good as it gets in both quantity and quality of fish. This time of year\, enormous bull reds come into the shallow marshes from the Gulf and feed actively on shrimp and baitfish. It is not unusual to cast to fish in excess of 20 pounds in water a foot deep or less. There are also trophy sized black drum and sheepshead\, both of which will readily take a fly as well. \n \nCome join me and a group of other anglers for a five night\, four day trip at Dogwood Lodge in Hopedale\, Louisiana. We have secured the prime dates of Dec. 8 to 13\, 2023. \nThe trip includes five nights lodging\, four full days of fishing from flats boats captained by some of Louisiana’s best fly fishing guides\, all beverages (including beer\, wine and alcohol) and meals (this is Louisiana so the food is going to be terrific!) and transportation to and from New Orleans. All you have to do is show up! \n \nThe Dogwood\, located about an hour outside of New Orleans\, is a re-purposed Coast Guard buoy tender with six cabins\, each with two twin beds and private bathrooms. It is docked right on the edge of the marsh. Each morning starts with a full Southern breakfast. Our guides will pick us up right at the lodge and take us to our day’s destination deep in the marshes. Bag lunches are provided and eaten while on the water. We will return to the Dogwood where there is a comfortable lounge and ample outdoor deck space to enjoy the sunset on the marsh. Dinner is prepared by the Dogwood’s full time chef and did I mention how good the food is? \n \nNew Orleans is one of America’s most unique cities: the birthplace of jazz\, home to Mardi Gras and Bourbon Street. One of my favorite things to do is roam the French Quarter and check out the street musicians and brass bands. I know I plan to spend at least a day or two on either end of the trip in the city soaking up the incredible music and culture and\, of course\, food! \nThe cost is still to be determined but will be between $3100 and $3500 based on double occupancy and two anglers per boat. Private rooms can be arranged for an additional $75 per night. This includes all meals\, drinks\, local transportation\, taxes and the guided fishing. Not included: Gratuities for the lodge staff and guides; Transportation to New Orleans; Fishing license fees. A deposit of half the total will be required to confirm your spot. \nPlease contact me\, Brian\, at brian@deerfieldflyshop.com or at 413-397-3665 to save your spot or for more information.

SUMMARY:Streamer Fishing Clinic Oct. 15
DESCRIPTION:The days are getting shorter and the leaves are starting to turn. Fall is here\, and that means it’s prime time for streamer fishing. As the water temperatures drop and the daylight hours get shorter\, trout sense that leaner times lay ahead. This is also the time of year when brown trout need to gain strength for the upcoming spawn and start to become more territorial. \nThis all adds up to more aggressive fish looking for bigger meals\, and streamers are a fun way to take advantage of this. \nJoin Hilltown Anglers and the Deerfield Fly Shop on October 15 to hone your skills on all aspects of streamer fishing. We will discuss what equipment we prefer\, how we set up our rigs to deliver these bigger flies\, which patterns we turn to given different conditions\, how to dissect the river to focus on the most likely water types\, and how we present our flies in different scenarios. We will also thoroughly cover proper hooksets and fighting and then landing fish with confidence! \nThe clinic is approximately 4 hours long. Beginning at 9 a.m. with an in-house presentation at the Deerfield Fly Shop\, we then head to the stream for demonstrations of different techniques and time for anglers to practice what they have learned and get feedback from guide Brian Gilbert of Hilltown Anglers. \nStudents should have their own equipment\, including wading gear and fly rod—a six weight is our preferred streamer rod loaded with sink tip or sinking line. There will be some gear available for anglers to demo. Equipment and essentials will be available for purchase at the Fly Shop. \nThe cost is $150 per angler. \nContact brian@deerfieldflyshop.com to register or with any questions.

SUMMARY:Winter Flies for the Swift River with Gary Metras: a Two-Week Class
DESCRIPTION:The Swift River below the Quabbin Reservoir is well known for its demanding trout. This river presents a unique set of challenges for the fly angler\, and you often need specific flies to meet those challenges. The Deerfield Fly Shop is proud to present the Best Winter Flies for the Swift River with Gary Metras\, who will lead you through a few of his favorite patterns for the tricky fish of the Swift River. This two-part fly-tying class takes place on consecutive Sundays  and will help you with the techniques needed to tie the smaller flies often required for success on the Swift in the winter. The first class will cover subsurface flies and the second will tackle dry flies. Gary will share some of his strategies for fishing these flies. Gary is past president of the Pioneer Valley Trout Unlimited and has taught the chapter’s tying classes for 15 years. He is an excellent angler and tyer and has been fishing the Swift every week for the past twenty years. \nPre-registration is required—call the shop at 413-397-3665 or email brian@deerfieldflyshop.com. This class consists of two three-hour sessions that will take place here at the shop on Sunday\, February 5 at 3 pm and Sunday\, February 12 at 3 pm. The fee is $50 total for both classes and will include materials for the flies to be tied. Bring your own vise\, tools and thread (Veevus 16/0 in a variety of colors recommended—the shop has plenty in stock).

SUMMARY:Low Country Redfish
DESCRIPTION:The endless waters surrounding Charleston\, SC\, are teeming with redfish. In the fall\, these hard fighting fish come into the shallow marshes on the flood tides–those occasional high tides that are higher than average–where they can be found tailing for the shrimp and crabs knocked off their safe perch among the reeds by the advancing tide. Some of the flats the fish come into are only covered in water a couple times a month\, yet the slowly cruising redfish seek these areas out and casually tail their way through the spartina grass in search of their next meal. This is a truly magical time of year in an amazing fishery. \nWe have secured some of the best guides in the area for three days of targeting these redfish during prime flood tides on October 11 to 13. Each day\, we will be two anglers and one guide per boat as we center our trips around the peak of the morning high tide when these tailing fish are most visible and most susceptible to a well presented fly. We will have some off-tide fishing that can also be terrific as well as reds like to come up into skinny water at lower tides. \nRedfish are powerful fish. Most fish are in the three to ten pound range but we will have shots at larger fish as well. Because they are up in skinny water and face constant danger from predators like dolphins in addition to anglers\, these fish can be very cautious and demand a stealthy approach and delicate cast. Flies are generally moderately weighted crab and shrimp patterns that can be cast effectively on six to eight weight rods. When hooked\, redfish are some of the strongest fighting fish\, pound for pound–more than enough sport on an eight weight. \nWhen we are not on the flats looking for tails\, we will be staying in an Air B and B near all our launch points. We will also be a short Uber ride to downtown Charleston\, which is a thriving city with great restaurants\, shopping and nightlife\, not to mention all the history (the first shots of the Civil War were fired in Charleston Harbor) and natural beauty of the area. \nCost for this hosted trip is $2100 per angler and includes three days of guided flats boat fishing\, tip for the fishing guides\, three nights lodging\, some local transportation\, and communally prepared breakfasts and lunches for the three days of fishing. Airfare to Charleston\, dinners and beverages are not included. \nFor more on flood tide redfishing\, check out this great primer on Gink and Gasoline. \nPlease call the shop at 413-397-3665 or email brian@deerfieldflyshop.com for more information or with any questions.

We will spend the early morning on Largemouth water\, where we will work on morning largemouth techniques through fishing for these solitary ambush hunters. We will stop mid-day for a siesta and lunch (provided). We all will reconvene post early-dinner\, and spend the evening fishing to Largemouth through the Magic Hour and into the dark.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSunday\, August 14th\n\n\n\nSunday consists of a full day Smallmouth float on one of our local rivers. Again the guides will show up with breakfast sandwiches and we will caravan to different stretches of Smallmouth water.  We will practice topwater and subsurface techniques to catch these excellent fighters.\n\n\n\nLunch will be provided boatside and camp will conclude at the end of this float.

SUMMARY:George Daniel Contact Nymphing Virtual Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Over the past five to ten years\, contact or Euro-style nymphing has made a lot of noise in the world of fly fishing and for good reason: it is VERY effective. However\, it can be as confounding and confusing as it is effective because it requires a host of new techniques and alternative rig set-ups to the indicator nymphing or dry fly fishing many of us are more familiar with. \n\n\n\nThe Deerfield Fly Shop is very proud to present a virtual workshop from perhaps the most preeminent educator in the sport\, George Daniel\, to help guide you through the ins and outs of contact nymphing\, from rods\, reels and lines to leader set ups and fly patterns to the techniques you will want to try on the water. See the full outline below for more details about the workshop. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis Zoom-based class will run on Thursday March 24 at 7 pm. The presentation itself will last 90 minutes and George will field all your questions afterwards. Cost is $50. Email brian@deerifeldflsyshop.com or call 413-397-3665 to register. Class space is limited. \n\n\n\nGeorge Daniel is the lead instructor at the legendary Penn State University fly fishing program started by George Harvey and run by Joe Humphries for many years. SUMMARY:Tying New England Trout Flies with Rich Strolis
DESCRIPTION:Though perhaps best known for his streamer patterns\, Rich Strolis has also developed numerous nymph and dry fly patterns that flat out catch trout. On Saturday\, March 5\, at 9 am\, Rich will share some of these in a Zoom class presented by the Deerfield Fly Shop. In this six-hour class\, he will lead you through a selection of time-tested patterns that have proven effective here in New England and beyond. With a few alterations in color and size\, these patterns should cover a majority of your insect hatch matching needs in New England throughout the course of the season. Limited to ten students\, Rich will teach this class as he does his in person classes–going step by step through each fly and waiting for all tyers to complete each step and answer all questions before moving on.\n\n\n\n\n\nThe class will require an advanced beginner to intermediate level of tying skill\, but will provide information and insights valuable to the most experienced of tyers as well. Rich will lead the class step by step through some of his best insect patterns as well as some other flies that have proven effective over the years\, including: Shucked Up Emerger\, R-F Caddis\, Dust Bunny Winter Stone\, Morgan Midge Variation\, Classified Caddis Pupa\, DDT Nymph\, Quill Bodied Jig\, and Shimmer Stone. Other patterns may also be tied if time allows.\n\n\n\nStudents should have their own vise and tools\, including scissors\, dubbing whirl\, bobbin and whip finish tool in addition to a compliment of threads in a variety of colors (in size 70 and 140 denier or 8/0 and 6/0—all thread and tools are available at the Deerfield Fly Shop). All materials will be provided in kits that Rich himself will put together and mail to all participants prior to the class. Bring an open mind and any questions you might have. Rich will go over hook choices\, material choices and substitutions and most importantly\, how to effectively fish these patterns.\n\n\n\n\n\nTuition for the class is $125 and includes the material kits. Advanced registration with payment in full is required by Feb. 23. Contact brian@deerfieldflyshop.com or call 413-397-3665 to register. This class is limited to 10 students and will fill up quickly!\n\n\n\nFrom right down the road in Connecticut\, Rich Strolis honed his craft as a guide on the Farmington and Housatonic Rivers and then shifted to commercial fly tying as his patterns started to gain national attention as consistent fish producers. He has fished his patterns all over the world and continues to torment the big browns of the Housatonic and Farmington! He is a signature designer for the Montana Fly Company and is on the pro staff at Thomas and Thomas as well as Regal Vise. The author of the well-received book Catching Shadows: Tying Flies for the Toughest Fish and Strategies for Fishing Them as well as numerous articles in the fly fishing magazines\, Rich is a sought after tyer and educator\, so we are very pleased to have him here at the Deerfield Fly Shop.
